Genesa: "Caught up in an American Crisis "

Genesa L. Gonzalez, age 26, resident for two years

“I feel comfortable here. For now, it’s home.”

In 2012, all was well with Genesa. She had overcome learning disabilities and had graduated from high school with honors a few years before. She was living with her mom and dog, Buddy, in their comfortable Mashpee home. She had grown up there and it was filled with memories of her childhood. Her journey toward independence was well on its way. She had secured a job at Stop ‘n Shop and spent her spare time volunteering at a farm caring for the horses – mucking out stall after stall. Tough work, but she didn’t mind. She would do anything to be near those beautiful animals.

Suddenly in the storm of bankruptcy sweeping across the country, her life was turned upside down and all was lost. She remembers too clearly the day they came to take her beloved, Buddy, away. She was thankful that she was at work and did not have to see him go. Her mother went to a motel and Genesa went to stay temporarily with friends. Chaos and uncertainty took over and all hope for an independent future was lost.

Her interview at Champ Homes marked the day when her dreams were reignited. She and her mother spent time with Carolyn Hebert and after a short while with this engaging and comforting Champ Homes co-founder, Genesa told her mom, “I feel comfortable here.” Since that day, Genesa has become a beloved and helpful member of the community. Her gentle spirit has a calming effect on others and combined with her strong sense of right and wrong, she has become a peacemaker and advisor among her peers. She is working at a horse farm again, only not as a volunteer. With a sparkle in her eyes she explains, “This is the first time that I have been paid for doing what I love to do!”

One life-defining event has occurred this year. With the support of staff members, Genesa became determined to conquer her weight problem which has overwhelmed her since 3rd grade. “Every day was as miserable as the first day of school,” she remembers. She underwent weight loss surgery in the Spring and is well on her way to her goal.

Genesa dreams of someday living independently…of finding a dog who needs her and continuing to work with her beloved horses. Having moved through the opened, welcoming doors of Champ Homes, she finds that life’s doors are reopening and she’s eager to experience what her future promises.

UPDATE:Some exciting news about Genesa – she won 2 ribbons riding Dually at a 4-H show in August. She also has been accepted into Cape Cod Community College to start in September! Woo Hoo and Praise the One who holds Genesa in His Care!
